Behind the Scenes of a Tintype Portrait Session

With the help of many we are creating a behind the scenes video of the tintype portrait process. Since tintypes were invented back in 1847 by Frederick Scott Archer, not too many folks today are familiar with them.

Made popular during the Civil War, these are not anything like today’s point and shoot digital pictures. Special chemicals are mixed and then poured onto a metal or glass plate, dipped into a silver bath and then exposed in the camera. That plate is then developed and fixed while still wet.

I create tintypes using the original formulas. Each plate becomes a unique capture in silver and light.
